Bodoni “set what was, in general, to be the standard book style of the world until the appearance of William Morris.” Preece, Typography, Encyclopædia Britannica. William Morris “disliked Bodoni’s types, [and Morris’s followers] have stigmatized them as the acme of ugliness, that Bodoni has been responsible for all the bad printing produced since his types droves the Caslon letters from the stage of popular favor.” Gandy, Bodoni Type (1920, pgs. 22-23). 4to. Bound in period full calf, marbled boards, unrestored with boards detached but preserved in a custom chemise and slip case with some soiling, award label to pastedown, early ownership inscription to title contents with minor scattered soiling, otherwise clean and bright.
